The European Union signed a free trade deal with Canada yesterday with a huge sigh of relief at recording an international success following the blow of the Brexit vote. Hours of last-minute intensive talks were needed to salvage the agreement after objections from the Walloon parliament in Belgium threatened to scupper it.
