Drew Maggi, the Pirates’ 33-year-old rookie, comes full circle with surprise call-up

PITTSBURGH — Drew Maggi checked into the Residence Inn across the street from PNC Park on Saturday night, sat down in his room and gazed out the window. He could see the stadium, all lit up and humming with a game going on. It was as if the ballyard was waiting for him.

Finally.

“I did a lot of just sitting in that chair looking out, kind of like, ‘Wow, I’m here,’” Maggi said.

Maggi, the Peter Pan of the Pirates farm system, had come full circle. On Sunday — after playing in 1,155 minor-league games over 13 seasons — Maggi, 33, stepped onto the grass at PNC Park for pregame warmups wearing a Pirates uniform.

A 15th-round pick in 2010, Maggi climbed the Pirates’ system to Double-A Altoona but was released in 2015. After that, he bounced around the minors with five organizations.
