Northern Michigan has a housing crisis. That’s probably doesn’t come as a surprise to most people.
But some of the statistics might get your attention:
- Of 130 different apartment complexes, comprising more than 7,000 units, only 51 units were available. That’s 99.3 percent occupancy.
- In the 10 county region surveyed, about a quarter of the housing stock was used for seasonal housing.
That’s from the 2023 Housing Needs Assessment, commissioned by Housing North, and presented at the organization’s annual housing summit this week.
Homelessness is also a big concern for housing advocates. In Traverse City, about 90 people sleep in tents every night.
The vast majority of them — 97 percent — previously had housing in the area.
