Electric scooter rental companies have exited El Paso as the once-hot scooter rental industry has cooled.
Several national and regional electric scooter companies have gone out of business, but several others continue operating in cities nationwide.
The last of three companies renting scooters in Downtown El Paso exited this market last fall — several months after the El Paso City Council made the city’s electric scooter rental program permanent after a 4-year pilot program.
El Paso scooter ridership peaked in 2021 with 122,119 trips, city data show. Trips dipped to 69,945 in 2022, the lowest ridership over four years. The city has no 2023 ridership data.
City planning department officials declined to comment on why the companies left El Paso, and representatives for companies that operated here did not respond to requests for comments.
