Sky News readers have been submitting their questions about the war to our senior correspondents and military experts.

The latest query comes from Jim Rivera, who asks whether Ukraine is capable of liberating the Donbas – a swathe of territory on the Russian border comprised of much of the Donetsk and Luhansk regions.

The area is under the spotlight again this week, amid growing speculation about Ukraine’s long-awaited counteroffensive.

Military analyst Sean Bell said this… 

To try to answer this question, we do need to have a brief review of the recent history of the conflict in the Donbas.

A national survey held in March–April 2014 found that 31% of respondents in the Donbas wanted the region to separate from Ukraine, while 58% wanted autonomy within Ukraine.
