A former Kalgoorlie school teacher who swapped the classroom for a prison yard has found global acclaim for using Indigenous art as part of her educational programs.
Key points:
- The Australasian Corrections Education Association has conferred an award upon Cassie Tasker
- The former teacher won the award for her work with complex prison inmates in the West Australian Goldfields
- She was part of a team that produced a bilingual cover of Paul Kelly’s How To Make Gravy
Cassie Tasker was in her early 20s when she first stepped through the doors of Kalgoorlie’s Eastern Goldfields Regional Prison (ERGP).
More than a decade later, the EGRP’s educational campus manager has been recognised for her culturally inclusive and innovative education programs.
“It’s been a bit of a whirlwind couple of days, lots of congratulations and lots of chatter about the award,” she said.
