Florence Drummond wants her Indigenous sisters to have a seat at the mining table.
She’s the founder of Indigenous Women in Mining and Resources Australia (IWIMRA), a support network that helps Aboriginal women find a place in the resources sector.
“Racism has been a big challenge for Indigenous people in the industry, and not only Indigenous people but different people within the industry,” she said.
“[We are] addressing that as a network for women, empowering women who are in the industry to stand strong and to speak up and to be confident in themselves.”
The last few years have strained the relationship between Indigenous communities and big mining companies with the destruction of country and cultural sites problematic.
Just last week a massive coal mine expansion in the NSW Hunter Valley was knocked back on Indigenous heritage grounds.
