Fact-check unit not for any opinion, satire: Centre seeks dismissal of Kunal Kamra’s plea

By Vidya : While seeking dismissal of stand-up comic Kunal Kamra’s plea against the latest amendment brought in the Information Technology (Intermediary Guidelines and Digital Media Ethics Code) Rules, 2021 (IT Rules 2021), the Union government said that false and misleading information can adversely impact electoral democracy and it is in view of this, that the fight against fake news has begun.

The Union government, through V Chinnaswamy, working as a scientist with the Ministry of Electronics and Information Technology (MeitY) has filed a 21-page affidavit in which they have said that false information also had the impact of weakening the public’s trust in democratic institutions, creating doubts about the intentions of the elected government.
