DVB’s PR resources have been working overtime this week, with the European broadcast standards body firing out three announcements in quick succession. It started with confirmation of the DVB Native IP (NIP) specification, dubbed a “new era” for broadcast, followed by the unveiling of three new members, before, finally – and arguably most importantly for the Faultline readership – adding Versatile Video Coding (VVC) to the DVB treasure chest.
It means VVC is the first of three next-generation video codecs to be set in stone by DVB, following approval alongside AV1 and AVS3 last year to drive 4K and 8K streaming resolution roadmaps. DVB maintains that AV1 and AVS3 support will follow in the near future, without providing any estimated timeline, annoyingly.
