BT has confirmed the next phase of Digital Voice – the nationwide scrappage of the copper landline network for phone calls – will hit the North West and London later this year.
The phone operator is aiming to move away from old-style landlines entirely by the end of 2025, which will mean all households and businesses will need some form of internet connection in order to use the phone.
The move is part of an industry-wide shift away from the copper network to digital landlines, where phone calls will be made using Voice Over Internet Protocol (VOIP) technology via a broadband line – the same technology that powers phone calls on apps such as Skype and Zoom.
