Decatur, IL now has adult R&B on the FM dial. Los Angeles offers classic country. Las Vegas is airing Pride Radio. And in New York, ESPN Deportes is available over the air. Broadcasters call them HD Radio subchannels and HD Radio-fed FM translators. But to listeners, they are known simply as radio stations.
While HD Radio continues its measured, if not at times seemingly behindhand progress on the FM dial, the digital technology has truly found an ideal kinship that is wholly positive for broadcast radio. Thanks to the massive number of FM translators that have been approved by the Federal Communications Commission, these additional frequencies are allowing radio groups to fill local market format holes via HD-fed translators.
