Plymouth could have up to 25 new radio stations after broadcast regulator Ofcom approved a new digital radio licence for the area. The watchdog as given the nod for a digital radio network run by a group led by the company behind Devon’s Radio Exe and backed by Hospital Radio Plymouth.
It means Plymouth and the surrounding area could receive up to 25 new radio stations broadcasting on DAB+ digital radio. Ofcom is rolling out such services nationally, and asked for groups interested in running the service to apply last year.
Two did; PlymDab, based at Hospital Radio Plymouth, and another based in Cheltenham that operates similar services in Glasgow and Malta. PlymDab, the successful applicant, will now install two transmitters that together will reach around 250,000 listeners in Plymouth, West Devon and South East Cornwall.
