Verizon Profit Tops Estimates on Gains in Contract Customers

, the second-largest U.S. phone company, reported second-quarter profit that beat estimates after gaining more wireless subscribers on long-term contracts. Earnings were 73 cents a share, leaving out a one-time gain related to pensions, the New York-based company said today in a statement.
