Ask Irish people which EU country has the most liberal regime on recreational use of cannabis – otherwise dubbed “smoking dope” – and you’ll probably be told it’s the Netherlands.

Well, from next month Germans can legally possess 25g of cannabis for personal consumption, ushering in the EU’s most liberal drug regime. Even in the Netherlands – seen by so many people as especially relaxed on this fraught issue – the possession of more than 5g is still a criminal offence.
