The Netherlands borders the North Sea to the north and west, Germany to the east, and Belgium to the south. Home to some 17 million inhabitants, the country is extremely low-lying and remarkably flat, with large stretches of lakes, rivers and canals. With over 400 people per sq km, it is one of the most densely populated countries in the world.
