Huawei defies US sanctions with slight growth

The Chinese technology group Huawei was able to increase its sales slightly despite severe obstacles from US sanctions. In the first half of 2023, the company recorded sales growth of 3.1 percent. Revenue rose to 310.9 billion yuan from the same period last year, the Shenzhen-based tech giant said on Friday. Huawei said the net profit margin was 15.0 percent, resulting in a profit of 46.6 billion yuan.

The US government imposed sanctions on Huawei in 2019 under then-President Donald Trump, which were not withdrawn by Joe Biden’s government either. As a result, Huawei cannot use 5G chipsets in its smartphones, for example, unless China manufactures them itself in the future.
