Contractors back Labour pledge to speed up infrastructure planning decisions

Industry leaders have backed Labour’s promise to rewrite all 12 national policy statements (NPS) within six months of taking power in a bid to speed up infrastructure delivery.

Shadow chancellor Rachel Reeves today told delegates at the party’s annual conference in Liverpool that the critical documents would be overhauled urgently following an election win.

There are currently 12 NPS, which form the primary basis of decision making for nationally significant infrastructure projects in England. Six of these cover energy, three deal with transport and the others relate to water and waste.

But some of the statements are more than a decade old and Reeves pledged they would be given a new cutting edge by a Labour government.
