During a Broadcasting Summit, Information and Broadcasting Secretary Apurva Chandra announced that trials of the home-grown Direct-to-Mobile (D2M) technology would soon be conducted in 19 cities. He emphasized the importance of reserving the 470-582 MHz spectrum for this emerging technology.

Direct-to-Mobile broadcasting could soon allow mobile users to stream videos without a SIM card or an internet connection, making it a potential reality in the near future.

Mr. Chandra highlighted that a 25-30% shift of video traffic to D2M would alleviate the congestion on 5G networks, speeding up the country’s digital progress and making content delivery more accessible to all.

Pilot projects to test the D2M technology were carried out in Bengaluru, Kartavya Path, and Noida last year.

Mr. Chandra pointed out that the D2M technology has the potential to reach nearly 8-9 crore “TV Dark” homes…
