Brisbane maths teacher Jacob Rice taught at the Manus Island immigration detention centre in 2014 when a 23-year-old Iranian man name Reza Berati was bashed to death by security guards during a riot by hunger strikers. One of the friends the teacher-turned-whistleblower made while working on Manus for nine months was a Rohingya maths teacher.
