50-foot swells mean rare surfing meet is a go in Hawaii

Organizers of the rarely-held and invitation-only Eddie Aikau (EYE’-cow) big-wave surfing competition in Hawaii say the event will be held Thursday. The competition in memory of legendary big wave surfer Eddie Aikau hasn’t been held for six years. Organizers require waves around 40 feet tall and a swell that lasts long enough to run multiple heats.
