Carlton Pearson, a high-profile Tulsa megachurch pastor whose later turn to liberal theology made him an evangelical outcast but brought him a wider audience among progressive Christians and other faiths as well as inspiring a movie, died Sunday of complications from cancer.

A onetime Pentecostal preacher and protégé of late evangelist Oral Roberts, Pearson founded Higher Dimensions Family Church and helped build it into one of Tulsa’s largest congregations, with around 6,000 members at its peak in the 1990s.

But a dramatic shift in his beliefs and teachings in the early 2000s led to its decline and eventual closing.
