David Sedaris on not becoming an ‘old crank’ and new tour before N.J. performance

Now performing regularly around the world, David Sedaris the writer has forged a second career as David Sedaris the reader — and his post-show book signings have become a marathon curtain call.

During the signings, which can last for hours, Sedaris takes it upon himself to ask questions of his fans instead of vice versa.

“I never leave it to them because it’s my job as host,” he told NJ Advance Media in a recent interview.

With a COVID-prompted break in his readings in the rearview, Sedaris is back on the road with his latest book, “Happy-Go-Lucky,” including a performance at the State Theatre in New Brunswick scheduled for April 4.

“The book signings give you a way to connect with the people who are readers,” he said. “So many authors never get that opportunity. It’s kind of they’re thanking me; I’m thanking them—but it’s genuine and I enjoy it.”
