A growing network of American pilots are ferrying women across state lines so that they can access abortion services.
A patchwork of local laws has emerged since last year’s Supreme Court ruling that struck down Roe v Wade, which had enshrined a woman’s right to choose. Abortion may be severely limited or banned entirely, depending on the state.
Elevated Access, a group in Illinois, co-ordinates flights across the US. Its aircraft zip between small airports that dot the country, carrying women in need of abortions from state to state.
The organisation has already vetted more than 200 pilots, and more than 1,000 have expressed interest in volunteering, according to National Public Radio, the non-profit media organisation.
