Laser Measures Earth’s Magnetic Field with Artificial Stars

An international collaboration uses laser-generated stars to determine the Earth’s magnetic field in the sodium layer of the atmosphere. The mesosphere, at heights between 85 and 100 kilometers above the Earth’s surface, contains a layer of atomic sodium.
