For a teenager during the Battle of Britain there were few greater thrills than listening in to an RAF squadron leader giving his pilots attack instructions as they zoomed into combat. Ramsay Shearman had been given a one-valve shortwave radio that could tune into fighter pilot chatter, and the experience left him hooked for life.
