A Candy From Mars and America’s Sweetness

In the early 1980s, my family would gather at night around our battery-powered shortwave radio, listening to Voice of America. Back then I knew the broadcast only by its acronym, VOA, which I assumed was a Vietnamese word. Inside our thatched hut among rice paddies of the Mekong Delta, the radio delivered forbidden news of a world beyond Vietnam.
