While state-controlled Medium Wave or AM radio stations in Italy were reduced to a minimum of about 50 transmitters, all of them re-broadcasting RAI first radio channel, private AM stations have started to appear in Italy over this (almost) empty band.

Effective Feb 9, 2011, NEXUS-IBA and European Gospel Radio are on the air on two AM (Medium Wave) frequencies, covering the city of Rome (population 2.7 million) and the North East of Italy (Venice, Padua, Verona, Bologna and vicinities, population around 3 million) from 8 PM until 11 AMCentral European Time.

Following the tradition of a 30+ years old FM, Shortwave a,d now AM international relay service, IRRS (The Italian Radio Relay Service) and NEXUS-IBA  are carrying international programming from different sources from around the world, consisting mainly of news, information and dedicated segments of Christian radio in English.

1323 kHz AM/Medium Wave is very well heard in the North-Eastern part of Italy, including Padua, Venice, Verona, Vicenza and Bologna. Favoure by a quite clear channel all over continental Europe, listeners are reporting reception around several locations in Central and Northern Europe, i.e. in Austria, Germany, Switzerland, the Netherlands, Spain, Belgium, France, Croatia, Slovenia, Ukraine, Denmark, Sweden and Finland from 7 PM until 11 PM Central European Time.
